FAMILY
I first would like to give praise and thanks to my family.
My father was an honest farmer, dog breeder, carpenter, and a great dad in a day when providing for a family meant working over time and being removed from his family and the land he loved.
My mother who pretends to understand my compulsions and is the foundation of all that I am.
And my brother, Bass player and philosopher of history and literature who took his older brother's role of kicking my ass just serious enough to instill an incredible amount of determination to one day beat Goliath.
TEACHERS
Ms. Breckenridge - 1 & 2 grade - From her wheelchair she conveyed a virtue of humanity and humility that few children learn for a lifetime.
When the class became noisy and disruptive she would raise her hand and make the symbol for peace. All the students would follow until only the one disruptive student remained. It wasn't long before there was no disruption.
Mr. Miller - 4 th grade - Wow, go outside, because he could live outside. We picked flowers for lunch!
Mr. Miller had a profound relationship with the Indigenous People of our area and had spent time living independent in the forest.
He personified the spirit of a generation that embraced "Born Free" and Grizzly Adams.
Mr. Meneely History/Russian Studies 11 & 12 grade- Applied our learning to the real world, with model United Nation conferences and long weekends attending the Shakespearean theater of Stratford, Canada. Plus, he was hysterical!
Music - I wish I could say my school inspired music, but sadly our school, like many, suffered budget cuts that gave us an abysmal program.
Music - Personal
Earliest - Country Music, so many stories - "Delta Dawn, what's that flower you've got on!" sung by Tanya Tucker. Then come many of the greats:
Dolly Parton, Charlie Pride (Kiss an Angel Good Morning), Willy Nelson, Johny Cash.
Early - Stuck in the classic rock world of Kiss, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden until three little birds Bob Marley, Bono, and Sting changed everything.
with the final blow provided by Steel Pulse Earth Crisis which took me through my teens. INXS was my pop thing (Dancing on a Jetty).
Fishbone woke me up and took me on a ride with Dee-lite to NYC for perhaps the craziest year of my life living on the East side of Manhattan not for from the humble abode where a women known as Madonna resided just a few years before.
Then it would have to be Paul Simon and my personal favorite Rhythm of the Saints.
Eventually, I would make my way to Bahia Salvador, Brazil and see Olodum perform in a large square courtyard with raging percussion while a variety of singers would sing as if they were on fire.
Jazz has always had a place. Personal favorites Miles Davis - In Person at the Blackhawk San Francisco. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage.
Pacific Islands - Moari of New Zealand - Incredible Harmonies...
Hawaii - Hawaiian reggae - "Oh, so nice"
